Mustika Ratu Founder and Cultural Icon, Mooryati Soedibyo, Passes Away at 96
Jakarta. Mooryati Soedibyo, the founder of the cosmetics company Mustika Ratu and the Puteri Indonesia Foundation, as well as a prominent figure in traditional herbal medicine (jamu), passed away at the age of 96 on Wednesday at 01.00 a.m. Jakarta time.
Her daughter, Putri Kus Wisnu Wardani, confirmed her mother's passing. "Yes," said Putri.
According to a post on the official Instagram account of senior presenter Tantowi Yahya, @tantowiyahyaofficial, Mooryati Soedibyo was known as a visionary figure whose herbal concoctions, originating from the Surakarta Royal Palace's recipes, have provided many benefits to the nation and brought Indonesia's name to the international stage.
"Farewell Bu Moor. May all of your deeds and goodness during your lifetime lighten your path back to His embrace. I testify that you were a good person who has done much for this nation," said the former Indonesian ambassador to New Zealand.
Mooryati is currently laid to rest at the funeral home in Menteng, Central Jakarta. She is survived by five children: Djoko Ramiadji, Putri Kus Wisnu Wardani, Dewi Nurhandayani, Haryo T Baskoro, and Yulita Warastuti.
Mooryati, the granddaughter of King Paku Bowono X of the Surakarta Sultanate, started her herbal medicine business in 1975 and founded Mustika Ratu in 1978.
Mustika Ratu produces various beauty and health products marketed in Indonesia and abroad, such as in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the United States.
Mooryati was also known as the founder of the Puteri Indonesia Foundation and the initiator of the Puteri Indonesia beauty pageant, which has been held annually since 1992.
She served as the vice-chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly for the 2004-2009 period. Mooryati was also recognized by the Indonesia Record Museum (MURI) as the oldest doctoral degree holder in Indonesia and as the "Master of Herbal Medicine".
In 2007, she was ranked seventh on the list of the 99 most influential women in Indonesia by Globe Asia magazine.
