Minangkabau International Airport Closed Due to Volcanic Ash
Padang. Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) in Padang Pariaman was closed by regional airport authorities on Thursday due to the dispersion of volcanic ash from Mount Marapi's eruption towards the airport area.
The decision to close the airport was based on the findings of paper tests, resulting in the cancellation of several flights.
"Through the paper test, we observed that volcanic ash from Mount Marapi has reached Minangkabau Airport. We will continue to assess and monitor the situation. Hopefully, the dispersion will diminish or cease entirely," said Megi Helmiadi, Head of the Airport Authority.
This closure marks the fifth instance, previously occurring on December 22, 2023, January 5, January 19, February 29, and March 28, 2024.
The closure of BIM was made prioritizing passenger safety, as volcanic ash poses significant hazards to aircraft passengers. Proceeding with flights could allow volcanic ash to infiltrate the aircraft cabin.
Additionally, volcanic ash can obstruct airspeed monitoring systems, crucial for safe flight and landing. It may also disrupt navigation and other electronic systems.
Moreover, the spread of volcanic ash can create slippery runways, jeopardizing take-off and landing procedures. Furthermore, volcanic ash can impair aircraft engine functionality (compressor turbines), diminishing efficiency.
According to the report from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Mount Marapi's activity was observed from 00.00 to 06.00 a.m. Jakarta time on Thursday, emitting medium to strong pressure white and grayish-colored smoke, with moderate to thick intensity and a height of 400-1000 meters above the crater peak. PVMBG also noted eruptions reaching a height of 1000 meters with grayish-colored smoke.
