Jakarta. The General Election Commission (KPU) called for increased participation from young voters in the upcoming presidential and legislative elections scheduled for this year.

Indonesia, recognized as the third-largest democracy globally, boasts 204.8 million registered voters, with those aged between 29 and 44 constituting 56.45 percent of the electorate, according to KPU data.

KPU Commissioner August Mellaz said on Sunday that the younger generation plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation's future. 

“It's important to remember that we're not just electing the president; we're also selecting members of the House of Representatives, Regional Legislative Council, and local councils,” August said during an event in Jakarta.

Encouraging young voters to gather comprehensive information about political candidates in their respective electoral districts, August stressed the need for them to make "wise decisions."

Organized by the activist group "Bijak Memilih" (Choose Wisely), the event featured booths for all 18 political parties participating in the elections. Participants had the opportunity to inquire about policies and programs, and gain information about candidates. It also provided mockups of ballot papers and ballot boxes, offering training for first-time voters on how to exercise their voting rights.
