Jakarta. The first of a series of five presidential debates began Tuesday evening, with General Election Commission (KPU) Chairman Hasyim Asya'ri saying it should become a chance for the three candidates to win the voters’ favor.

“Hopefully, all presidential candidates can use this opportunity to deliver their visions, missions, and programs that can convince voters to choose them to lead Indonesia for the next five years,” Hasyim said as he kicked off the long-awaited debate.

The debate, which took place in a makeshift arena in front of the KPU building, was broadcast live by all major TV networks.

As many as 204.8 million people will cast their ballots in February. All three presidential hopefuls Prabowo Subianto, Ganjar Pranowo, and Anies Baswedan were present at the debate.
