Kaesang Says Anies Has ‘Most Realistic Chance’ to Win Jakarta Election
Jakarta. Kaesang Pangarep, the youngest son of President Joko Widodo, said on Friday that he is open to the possibility of becoming a running mate for Anies Baswedan, whom he believes has the most realistic chance to win the Jakarta gubernatorial election.
Kaesang, chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), is widely expected to contest local elections in November after his brother, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, was elected vice president alongside president-elect Prabowo Subianto.
Earlier this week, he made a surprise statement about teaming up with Anies, a staunch critic of his father’s presidency.
On Friday, he reiterated his readiness to pair with Anies in the Jakarta election.
“If I were to team up with another candidate, I would look into surveys, and it’s clear Mr. Anies has the most realistic chance,” Kaesang said in Jakarta.
Anies served as the Jakarta governor from 2017 to 2022 and contested the February 14 presidential election, where he lost to Prabowo.
Kaesang said he is also open to pairing with former West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, another strong candidate for the Jakarta governorship.
He described both Anies and Ridwan as “great men” who have led big provinces.
However, Kaesang noted that he couldn’t confirm his candidacy until August.
