Jokowi Explains Why Independence Day Ceremonies Will Be Held in Nusantara and Jakarta
Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo announced on Tuesday that national ceremonies commemorating Independence Day will be held in both the future capital Nusantara and Jakarta to symbolize the beginning of the capital's relocation.
The president confirmed that he will lead the event in Nusantara, East Kalimantan, while his future successor, Prabowo Subianto, will attend the Jakarta event.
"We are in a transition period from Jakarta to the future national capital, Nusantara. The separate ceremonies are meant to symbolize the relocation, so we are going to have a ceremony here and in Nusantara," Jokowi told reporters during a visit to South Jakarta.
He mentioned that his office is drafting a presidential decree on the capital relocation. Once issued, future ceremonies commemorating Independence Day will be centralized in Nusantara.
The decree will also address the mobilization of people and goods to Nusantara and accommodations in the new city.
All former presidents and former vice presidents are invited to the ceremony in Nusantara in August, he said.
