Japan Earthquake: 1,315 Indonesians Live in Ishikawa
Jakarta. As many as 1,315 Indonesians live in the Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa which suffered from a major earthquake on Monday, the government said.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry is currently in contact with the Indonesian diplomatic representatives in Tokyo and Osaka to find out the impact of the earthquake. Both the embassy and consulate general are in communication with the local authorities to make sure that the Indonesian citizens are safe and sound.
“A 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit Ishikawa, Japan, on Jan. 1, 2024, at 4.10 p.m. local time,” the ministry announced in a press statement on Monday.
“The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo’s self-report system recorded that 1,315 Indonesians live in Ishikawa Prefecture,” the press statement said.
Indonesian citizens are advised to remain alert for any aftershocks and tsunamis. The citizens should also keep updated on any instructions issued by the local authorities.
The tsunami warning is still in place as of Monday night Japan time.
Judha Nugraha, the director for Indonesian citizen protection at the Foreign Ministry, said the government was still checking on the condition of the Indonesians in Ishikawa.
“We still do not have any information on that,” Judha said via text on Monday, when asked by the Jakarta Globe if the quake had claimed any Indonesian victims.
The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has opened up the hotline (+818035068612). A hotline set up by the Indonesian consulate general in Osaka is also available at +818031131003.
According to the Associated Press, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported more than a dozen quakes off the coast of Ishikawa and nearby prefectures shortly after 4 p.m., one of them with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6. Japan has also issued tsunami alerts and ordered evacuations following the earthquakes.
At least six homes were damaged by the quakes, with people trapped inside. A fire has broken out in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and electricity is out for more than 30,000 households, according to government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi.
