Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama confirmed that his administration has taken over the management of the Bantargebang landfill site in Bekasi, West Java, from private company Godang Tua Jaya.

The action was taken based on separate audits by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) and PricewaterhouseCoopers, both showing that Godang Tua had failed to properly manage the operation.

However, Ahok said he was not aware of any lawsuits the company may bring against the Jakarta administration.

"We have two auditors. That is what our lawyers advised. If we are to win any court case on the matter, then we need a minimum of two audits, including an independent one of international standard. Therefore, we invited the one of international standard [PricewaterhouseCoopers] to also conduct an audit," Ahok said on Thursday (21/07).

The governor explained that he had postponed issuing a third warning letter to Godang Tua for quite some time, because he had to wait for the independent auditor's results.

Ahok said under his administration's management, the operating expenses of the landfill site would be reduced by up to 70 percent, despite the additional payments to local residents under a community development program.

Godang Tua removed all its heavy equipment from the landfill site before the Jakarta administration took over. However, operations have since returned to normal as the Jakarta provincial government has brought in its own heavy equipment.
