Injured Teen Linked to Jakarta School Explosion Transferred to ICU, Classmates Say He Was Bullied
Jakarta. One of the victims in Friday’s explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta, who police suspect may also be involved in the incident, has been moved to intensive care as investigators continue to examine what triggered the blast at the North Jakarta public school.
The victim, identified as student F, was transferred from Islamic Hospital Jakarta to Yarsi Hospital in Central Jakarta on Friday afternoon due to severe head injuries, according to hospital sources. Doctors requested a CT scan after his condition deteriorated.
“There is no official confirmation yet regarding his role,” a police official said separately, adding that investigators are still scrutinizing the status and involvement of each individual affected by the explosion.
Emotion was visible outside the hospital as F’s mother broke down in tears when her son, heavily bandaged and appearing unconscious, was wheeled through emergency access. “I just want my son to survive,” she said.
Classmates Say F Was Bullied
Multiple schoolmates told reporters the student had long been a target of bullying at school.
A student identified only as Z said the suspected student was known to be quiet and withdrawn, and that many were aware he was often mocked or mistreated by peers.
“He looked like he couldn’t handle it mentally anymore. He often looked stressed. People said he got bullied a lot,” Z said on Friday.
Z said he did not personally witness the bullying because he was not in the same class, but heard about it from others. According to him, the student had become increasingly isolated and rarely interacted socially. He allegedly spent much of his time alone and was said to draw disturbing images, including depictions of blood and weapons.
Z said he did not see the student at the mosque area when the explosion occurred, but later heard that police and military personnel found him lying near a pile of trash behind the school.
An 11th grade student said the suspected perpetrator was a schoolmate who had long been the target of teasing and bullying. She believed the act was driven by despair and a desire for retaliation.
“I suspect he wanted revenge and suicide. I saw three types of bombs, but only two exploded,” Sela said at the scene.
Officers reportedly discovered several suspicious items at that location, including a soda can believed to be part of a homemade explosive device. Bomb disposal officers are analyzing the object.
No fatalities so far
Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Asep Edi Suheri told reporters that no deaths have been recorded in the incident, which triggered panic among students, teachers, and parents, and quickly went viral on social media.
“As of this afternoon, there are no fatalities, and some victims have already been discharged,” Asep said. “A total of 55 people sustained mostly minor to moderate injuries, including burns and cuts from debris.”
Densus 88, Indonesia’s counterterrorism police, along with North Jakarta Police and Jakarta Metro Police forensic teams, have cordoned off the school grounds and are continuing to collect evidence, including CCTV footage.
Authorities are also examining a replica firearm resembling an AR-15 style airsoft gun, photos of which spread widely online on Friday, to determine whether it has any connection to the blast.
Students in purple-and-black batik uniforms were evacuated immediately after the explosion, and dozens of parents rushed to the school entrance in panic. Local residents also assisted in calming students as they left the compound.
Bomb disposal officers and firefighters remain on site, sweeping the area to ensure there are no further explosive materials.
Police said they will not speculate until laboratory analysis and forensic testing are completed.
“This just happened today,” Asep said. “We are exploring every possibility, and we will announce the results once the examinations are finished.”
