Mississauga, Canada. Alvin Tedjo, a 43-year-old politician of Indonesian descent, has won the mayoral election in Mississauga, Ontario, defeating incumbent Mayor Carolyn Parrish and former mayor Bonnie Crombie.

Tedjo secured 74,479 votes in Monday’s election, according to preliminary results released by the City of Mississauga. Parrish received 51,853 votes, while Crombie finished third with 43,191 votes.

The victory marks a turnaround for Tedjo, who finished second behind Parrish in the city’s 2024 mayoral byelection. He will succeed Parrish and is scheduled to take office on Nov. 15.

Born in 1982, Tedjo moved to Canada with his family when he was four years old. His father, Anto Tedjo, is a doctor originally from Padang, West Sumatra. The family settled in Mississauga, where Tedjo grew up, built his career, and raised his own family. He is married to Rebecca and has three children.

Before entering local politics, Tedjo built a career in government relations, communications, and higher education. He worked at Ontario’s provincial government headquarters, serving as a senior assistant to four ministers responsible for higher education. He later held public affairs and government relations positions at Sheridan College and Toronto Metropolitan University.

Tedjo studied political science at Queen’s University in Ontario and pursued graduate-level studies in learning design and digital media design at Harvard Extension School in the United States.

His political career included an unsuccessful run as an Ontario Liberal Party candidate in the 2018 provincial election and a bid for the party’s leadership in 2020.

He entered municipal politics in 2022, winning a seat on Mississauga’s city council representing Ward 2, which includes the Clarkson and Lorne Park neighbourhoods.

As a councillor, Tedjo supported expanding housing options, protecting green spaces, improving public transportation and strengthening social services, including assistance for homeless residents and food banks.

During his 2026 mayoral campaign, he focused on affordability, neighbourhood safety and public services, presenting himself as an alternative to the city’s existing leadership.

The preliminary election results remain subject to official certification. Tedjo’s win puts him at the helm of a city that has been his home since childhood, bringing his journey from an immigrant family of Indonesian descent to the mayor’s office full circle.
