Indonesian Politician Urges Strengthened Russia-ASEAN Cooperation
Jakarta. House of Representatives member Dave Akbarshah Fikarno Laksono encouraged Russia's more active role in cooperation with ASEAN during a recent conference.
The Golkar Party politician said Russia and ASEAN countries may enhance cooperation in political, economic, and social affairs while “harmonizing approaches” to relevant issues on the global and regional agenda.
He made the remarks during the Roundtable Discussion Forum held online by the United Russia Party in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Dave, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Golkar Party, said the cooperation between Russia and ASEAN must be based on mutual respect to promote the peaceful resolution of disputes and nonuse of violence or threats of violence in accordance with international law.
The cooperation can be extended to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to develop a greater Eurasian partnership based on the principles of equality and mutually beneficial relations, he added.
"We need to encourage contacts between our countries on various issues to improve the Russia-ASEAN strategic partnership," Dave in a statement.
The cooperation includes trade, economic, and investment interactions between EAEU and ASEAN member countries in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Eurasian Economic Commission and ASEAN in 2018, he said.
Dave, a member of a House commission overseeing foreign affairs, said Russia and ASEAN have reached an agreement on an energy cooperation work plan for 2023-2025.
On the security fronts, both sides can take collective actions against terrorism, drug and human trafficking, and other transnational crimes, he said.
