Indonesian Maid in Singapore Tests Positive for Coronavirus
Jakarta. A migrant worker in Singapore became the first known Indonesian to be infected with coronavirus, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah said the Indonesian woman worked as a domestic helper in Singapore.
“After communicating with manpower staff at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore, we can now confirm that one of our migrant workers has been infected,” Ida said in Jakarta.
“She is 44 years old and works as a maid there,” Ida said without identifying the woman. She added the maid is now being treated under quarantine at the Singapore General Hospital.
"We keep monitoring the case and are ready to provide any kind of support not just for Singapore but also Hong Kong and Taiwan. Hopefully no more Indonesian migrant worker is infected," Ida said.
The Indonesian Embassy in Singapore wrote on Twitter that the woman had not traveled to China recently but her employer also tested positive for the virus in a local transmission case.
“There are six new coronavirus cases in Singapore, four of them are locally transmitted cases and one of the patients is an Indonesian maid,” the embassy said.
“The Indonesian citizen has no history of travelling to China but she works for a Singaporean employer who also has been confirmed of having coronavirus,” it said.
The six new cases bring the total number of coronavirus cases in Singapore to 24.
