Jakarta. The House of Representatives has slashed lawmakers’ salaries and allowances, reducing their monthly take-home pay to around Rp 65 million ($4,000), following mass protests against excessive benefits that triggered deadly nationwide unrest.

Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed on Friday that cuts were made to allowances for electricity, telecommunications, and transportation. The move follows the earlier cancellation of the Rp 50 million monthly housing allowance, along with reductions in fuel and rice subsidies that together amounted to around Rp19 million previously.

Until recently, lawmakers could receive a minimum of Rp 120 million ($7,300) per month in salaries and perks, a figure that drew public anger when revealed last month. On August 25, demonstrations erupted outside parliament in Jakarta to oppose the housing allowance and later escalated into violent nationwide protests lasting a week.

At least 10 people were killed during the unrest, amid clashes between demonstrators and security forces and violence by rioters in several provinces.

Parliamentary leaders said the measures are intended to restore public trust, emphasizing that the institution will prioritize legislative quality and transparency moving forward.

  • Spouse Allowance: Rp 420,000
  • Child Allowance: Rp 168,000
