Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Confirms Safety of Citizens Amid Ishikawa Earthquake

Jakarta. As of Tuesday, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo has verified that no Indonesian citizens were harmed in the earthquake in Ishikawa, Japan, which claimed six lives. The embassy is actively monitoring the condition of Indonesian citizens residing in regions impacted by the 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Japan.

As many as 1,315 Indonesians live in the Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa which suffered from a major earthquake on Monday. As of Tuesday afternoon, there are still nine Indonesian citizens in shelters, including students and interns. 

The Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Heri Akhmadi, assured that since Monday evening, the embassy's team has contacted community nodes in the disaster area to ascertain the current condition of Indonesian residents there.

"A few minutes after the disaster, the team made contact through telephone connections with community nodes in the disaster area. They have generally left their homes based on local government instructions to stay temporarily in shelter locations," the ambassador said on Tuesday.

The embassy has also made arrangements for logistical support to address emergencies during the stay of Indonesian citizens in shelters. This involves coordinating with local authorities for data gathering and assessing the health conditions of Indonesian citizens.

"Follow the advice and instructions from local government authorities. Do not return to settlements in situations that may not be safe according to officials at the disaster site. The embassy, with the help of community nodes, is ready to assist urgent needs for Indonesian citizens in the disaster area," he added.

The earthquake was also felt in the prefectures of Niigata, Toyama, Fukui, Nagano, Gifu, Tokyo, Yamagata, Fukushima, and Ibaraki. It was also felt in Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Tottori, Iwate, Miyagi, and Akita. The earthquake has caused tsunami waves in several areas. With the lifting of the tsunami warning on Tuesday morning, most residents have been permitted to return to their homes.

The embassy in Tokyo and the consulate general in Osaka are actively collaborating with local authorities and reaching out to various community representatives in the impacted regions to ensure the safety and welfare of Indonesian citizens. In addition to the 1,315 Indonesian citizens residing in Ishikawa Prefecture, there are 1,344 in Toyama and 1,132 in Niigata, all of whom have been affected by the earthquake.

Earlier on Monday, the embassy had issued appeals through social media channels and instant messaging groups for Indonesian citizens to remain vigilant, monitor information, and follow local government instructions. The Foreign Affairs Ministry have also activated hotline numbers for emergencies, with KBRI Tokyo at +818035068612 and KJRI Osaka at +818031131003.
