Jakarta. Indonesia welcomes the UN Security Council’s approval of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, which will see the establishment of a temporary international force in the war-torn enclave. 

Trump has pitched a 20-point plan, parts of which call for an International Stabilization Force (ISF) aimed at training vetted Palestinian policemen in Gaza. Washington will work with partner countries to set up this team of personnel, who will also train vetted Palestinian policemen in Gaza.

The 15-member UN Security Council recently voted on this force, with 13 countries in favor, while Russia and China abstained. The council also backed the establishment of a Trump-led “Board of Peace”. This is an international transitional body that will handle the funding for Gaza’s redevelopment until the Palestinian Authority completes its reform programs.

“Indonesia welcomes the passage of the UN Security Council Resolution on Gaza on Nov. 17, which aims to safeguard the ceasefire and ensure humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza,” the Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang said on Tuesday. 

“The resolution prioritizes conflict resolution and sustainable peace by strengthening the capacity of the Palestinian Authority, reconstruction assistance, and peacekeeping by a UN-mandated international stabilization force,” Yvonne said.

Indonesia, a staunch supporter of the Palestinians, has repeatedly pledged to send peacekeepers to Gaza. However, Jakarta prefers to wait for a UN mandate before actually deploying some personnel. Southeast Asia’s biggest economy has been in discussions with regional partners, including Jordan, on the joint peacekeeping mission, chief diplomat Sugiono told the press on Friday.

The latest UN Security Council resolution will add international legitimacy to Trump’s proposal. 

US Representative to the UN Mike Waltz spoke of Indonesia’s endorsement just moments before the council made the vote. President Prabowo Subianto had met Trump on the margins of the UN Summit in late September, alongside leaders of Muslim-majority nations like Egypt and Turkiye.

“We have all bound together, recognizing the urgency of the situation and for swift adoption to deny Hamas any opportunity to reconstitute and to ensure that the people of Gaza can be fed,” Waltz said, as quoted by the US government’s transcript.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth already signaled Indonesia’s participation in the yet-to-be-established force. Hegseth had even met Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin on the sidelines of an ASEAN meeting in Kuala Lumpur late last month. 

“I want to thank you for your leadership on the International Stability and Security Force in Gaza, which you have leaned forward on,” Hegseth told Sjafrie during the presser.
