Indonesia – US Tariff Talks Stay on Track Despite Venezuela Tensions: State Secretary
Jakarta. The government has assured that rising tensions in Venezuela will not affect ongoing tariff negotiations between Indonesia and the United States, insisting talks will proceed as scheduled.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said follow-up negotiations will move into the legal drafting stage next week, with delegations from both countries set to finalize technical details between Jan. 12 and Jan. 19.
The trade document is expected to be signed by President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump by the end of January 2026.
“According to the schedule, January 12 to 19 will be dedicated to the legal drafting,” Prasetyo said after a ministerial retreat at Garuda Yaksa complex in Hambalang, Bogor, on Wednesday. He added that the exact signing date would depend on the outcome of the drafting process.
Prasetyo said the government expects the latest trade agreements reached by both sides to be fully incorporated into the legal text, while negotiations would continue to safeguard Indonesia’s interests.
Earlier, Chief Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the core substance of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) had been agreed, with discussions now entering a technical phase ahead of formal ratification.
The ART follows a deal reached on July 22, 2025, under which US tariffs on Indonesian products were cut from 32% to 19%. Indonesia also secured special tariff exemptions for key export commodities, including palm oil, coffee, and cocoa.
As part of the agreement, Indonesia committed to removing tariffs on nearly all US products and easing non-tariff barriers, including local content requirements, though exemptions will be limited to certain sectors such as information and telecommunications technology, data centers, and medical equipment.
