Jakarta. Indonesia is tapping a Brazilian solution to quell its forest fires, whose smoke has choked its ASEAN neighbors.

Chief Security Minister Dudung Abdurachman said the government would use various methods to extinguish the fires. He revealed that Brazil had given Indonesia a fire-suppressant technology in the form of “liquid”.

“This sprayable liquid helps extinguish fires. We have already tested this in South Sumatra and Kalimantan,” Dudung told reporters at the palace in Jakarta over the weekend.

He went on to say that Indonesia will continue aerial operations.

The disaster management agency BNPB recently revealed that it had tested the extinguishing agent “Realiza Anti Chamas” in Banyuasin, South Sumatra. The agent comes in powder form and dissolves in water before it is sprayed onto the fire.

The smoke has affected Singapore, Malaysia, and even reached the Philippines. Japan had sent forest-fighting troops and helicopters, although they had completed the mission. Malaysia also offered to send helicopters.
