Indonesia Says UAE's OPEC Exit Won't Strain Ties
Jakarta. The United Arab Emirates or the UAE is about to quit the OPEC and OPEC+ groups in less than 24 hours from now amid a raging global energy crisis -- a decision that Jakarta says will not strain bilateral ties.
The UAE announced that it would exit the cartel that coordinates production among many of the world’s largest oil producers for the sake of its “national interests”, effective on May 1. Its departure came at a time when countless oil tankers are still unable to escape the Strait of Hormuz due to the US-Israel-Iran war.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang said Thursday that Jakarta viewed UAE's exit as “part of the evolving dynamics of global energy governance”.
“The Indonesian government will continue to keep an eye on the overall situation and its implications [of the UAE's departure] on our economy and national energy security,” Yvonne told a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.
“The UAE's policy [of quitting OPEC] will not take a toll on our existing bilateral relationship or the strategic cooperation that we have established.”
Reports show that OPEC has struggled with Saudi Arabia’s dominance in the group’s decision-making.
Aside from the UAE, the OPEC includes Algeria, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. The club holds more than 80% of the world’s proven oil reserves. It regulates oil prices by placing caps on how much oil each member can produce.
In 2025, the UAE’s production totaled 4.6 million barrels per day, making it the group’s third-largest producer of petroleum and other liquids. On top of the list were Saudi Arabia (11.19 million barrels per day) and Iran (4.71 million barrels per day), according to the Associated Press. The UAE aims to ramp up production to 5 million barrels per day by 2027.
The latest available government data revealed Indonesia’s oil and gas imports from the UAE totaled $337.2 million in the first two months of 2026. This marks quite a jump from $129.2 million recorded the same period the previous year. About $995.7 million worth of Emirati oil and gas shipments flowed into Indonesia throughout 2025.
