Indonesia Mulls Selling Old Yugoslavian-Made Warship
Jakarta. Indonesia is considering selling its old Yugoslavian-made warship, the KRI Ki Hajar Dewantara, but the sale hinges on lawmakers’ approval, among other things.
President Prabowo Subianto has sent a letter to the House of Representatives to give the go-ahead.
“We have received the president’s letter on the possible sale of the KRI Ki Hajar Dewantara,” Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said in a parliamentary session in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The government first ordered the corvette in 1978. The vessel was built in Split, Yugoslavia, which is now Croatia’s largest shipyard. It officially became part of the Navy’s fleet in the early 1980s. The Navy mainly used the ship to train cadets, but later decided to decommission it in August 2019. News outlet Indonesia Defense wrote that the ship was facing spare part and engine issues.
Another deputy speaker, Saan Mustopa, also confirmed that the parliament’s defense commission would “iron out the technical details”. The commission is expected to hold talks with government officials, although the date of this meeting remains undisclosed.
Indonesia has also not named a specific country that would likely be interested in KRI Ki Hajar Dewantara.
