Indonesia, India Discuss Modi’s Planned Visit to Jakarta
New Delhi. Foreign Minister Sugiono visited New Delhi on Sunday for the 8th Indonesia-India Joint Commission Meeting, where he discussed preparations for a planned visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jakarta.
Sugiono said the meeting provided an important opportunity to review ongoing cooperation and follow up on commitments made by the two countries’ leaders during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to India last year.
“We discussed several outstanding issues and bilateral cooperation initiatives that remain pending between the two countries, particularly in the economic sector,” Sugiono said in New Delhi.
The discussions covered cooperation in pharmaceuticals, trade, exports and imports, medical training, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges, he added.
Sugiono was welcomed by Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, with one of the meeting’s key agenda items focusing on preparations for Modi’s planned visit to Indonesia, which would serve as a reciprocal visit following Prabowo’s trip to India in 2025.
Beyond arrangements for the state visit, the two ministers reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors, including economic development, education, defense, and security.
“The most notable aspect of this meeting was how trade and investment between India and Indonesia can continue to increase and how bilateral relations can be further strengthened,” Sugiono said.
He added that Indian visitor arrivals to Indonesia have reached approximately 500,000 tourists, underscoring the growing people-to-people ties between the two countries.
India is one of Indonesia’s largest trading partners in South Asia, with cooperation spanning energy, pharmaceuticals, digital technology, defense, and maritime affairs.
