Indonesia and Turkiye Step Up Cooperation on Defense, Energy and EVs
Ankara. Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Turkiye, expanding cooperation across key sectors including trade, defense, multilateral coordination, and the development of an electric vehicle ecosystem, Foreign Minister Sugiono said on Friday.
Speaking at a joint press conference following the Indonesia–Turkiye “2+2” dialogue involving foreign and defense ministers in Ankara, Sugiono said both countries agreed to accelerate negotiations on an economic partnership framework as part of efforts to unlock broader mutual benefits.
“We agreed on the importance of swiftly finalizing a limited preferential trade agreement as an initial foundation toward a comprehensive strategic economic partnership that can generate tangible economic benefits for the people of both countries,” Sugiono said.
Beyond conventional trade, Sugiono highlighted growing cooperation in renewable energy and downstream industries. Indonesia and Türkiye plan to collaborate on building an electric vehicle battery production ecosystem, strengthening petrochemical industries, and exploring new opportunities in mining and energy.
In defense, the two countries share a common goal of achieving greater industrial self-reliance. Cooperation is expected to focus on enhancing military technological capabilities through technology transfers and joint production, reflecting Indonesia’s broader push to modernize its defense industry.
The high-level dialogue also addressed regional and global developments, including closer coordination within multilateral forums such as the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and ASEAN. Humanitarian issues featured prominently in the discussions.
Both sides reaffirmed their consistent support for the Palestinian cause, pledging to strengthen collective diplomatic efforts on the international stage to advance the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan welcomed the deepening partnership, describing Indonesia as a key partner in Türkiye’s broader Asia-Pacific engagement strategy.
“Türkiye has a holistic vision to expand its involvement in the Asia-Pacific region, and Indonesia occupies a strategic position within that vision,” Fidan said. He added that the two countries would also focus on enhancing food and energy security while identifying other promising areas for cooperation.
Despite expectations surrounding defense procurement, neither side provided further details on Indonesia’s planned acquisition of 48 KAAN fighter jets, a fifth-generation stealth aircraft developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries. The contract was signed by Indonesia’s Defense Ministry in July 2025.
The KAAN fighter made its maiden flight in 2024, and as of July 2025, Turkish Aerospace Industries had developed three prototypes of the aircraft.
The meeting was also attended by Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, underscoring the growing strategic importance of the bilateral relationship.
