Jakarta. Indonesia’s historic run at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2026 ended in heartbreak on Saturday after the hosts lost 5-4 to Iran in a penalty shootout in the final at Indonesia Arena.

The title decider went to penalties after both sides were locked at 5-5 following extra time, capping a dramatic and high-intensity match. Iran sealed victory when Saeid Ahmadabbasi converted the decisive spot kick, moments after Indonesia’s Israr Megantara failed to score from the penalty spot.

Iran struck early in the first half through Hossein Tayyebi, asserting control with aggressive pressing. Indonesia responded with resilience and flair, turning the game around to lead 3-2 at halftime, with Israr emerging as the driving force after scoring twice.

Iran showed their pedigree after the break, relying on a power-play setup that was finished by Mahdi Karimi. Salar Aghapour and veteran Tayyebi played key roles in dragging Team Melli back into the contest as the match flowed end to end.

Indonesia and Iran were tied 4-4 at the end of regulation time, forcing extra time. The hosts briefly regained the lead when Israr scored again, capitalizing on a quick corner taken by Ardiansyah Nur. But Iran responded through Salar, making it 5-5 and pushing the final into a shootout.

Despite the defeat, Indonesia delivered a historic performance, finishing as runners-up in their first-ever appearance in an Asian futsal final. For Iran, the victory secured a record-extending 14th AFC Futsal Asian Cup title, reinforcing their dominance in the continental game.
