Indonesia Drafts Regulation for 100 GW Solar Power
Jakarta. Work is underway to clear the regulatory framework on the ambitious 100-gigawatt solar program, according to a senior official.
Eniya Listiani Dewi, the director-general for renewables at the Energy Ministry, said Tuesday that the regulatory work was now underway. This way, the government can quickly align it with existing regulations.
"We are working on the presidential regulation now," Eniya was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.
Indonesia is also in the process of making revisions to its 2025-2034 power generation roadmap to accommodate more solar energy.
In the current document, Indonesia is planning to add 69.5 gigawatts of electricity into its system; about 42.6 gigawatts will come from renewables and some 10.3 gigawatts are from energy storage. As many as 16.6 gigawatts will be from fossil-fuel power plants. Solar power will make up around 17.1 gigawatts.
Fabby Tumiwa, the chief executive officer of the energy think-tank IESR, also agreed with the need to quickly wrap up the presidential regulation.
"The document must also clearly state the target and the division of roles. It should also lay out other details such as the coordination mechanism, financing, procurement, as well as transparency and accountability principles," Fabby said.
President Prabowo Subianto recently unveiled the gradual construction of Indonesia's 100-gigawatt-peak (GWp) solar power program as the coal-reliant country seeks to shift to cleaner energy. He also announced 14 projects amounting to 5.3 GWp and an investment value of $7.7 billion.
Prabowo wants to achieve 100 GWp of solar power capacity by 2029, an ambitious plan that will likely require $73 billion in investments. Indonesia aims to develop 30 GWp of solar capacity within this year.
