Jakarta. Indonesia has begun a phased repatriation of 3,595 nationals from Cambodia after they registered with the Indonesian Embassy and completed preliminary assessments, the embassy in Phnom Penh said on Saturday.

The first group of 743 Indonesians is scheduled to return on Sunday, with the repatriation process set to continue through March 4. According to the embassy, most of those who reported themselves lacked valid passports and were fined for overstaying by Cambodian immigration authorities.

The embassy also noted that 225 Indonesians have returned home independently since Jan. 30, 2026.

The operation involves coordination between the Foreign Affairs Ministry and several international organizations, including the International Organization for Migration.

Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia Santo Darmosumarto said all returnees would undergo further screening upon arrival in Jakarta.

“The embassy will ensure that once they arrive in Jakarta, they will be subject to follow-up examinations by the relevant authorities,” Santo said in a statement.

Many Indonesians in Cambodia have been accused of involvement in online scam networks and human trafficking. The repatriation follows large-scale operations by Cambodian authorities targeting regional cybercrime syndicates.

Santo said Indonesians found to be linked to online scam activities would face legal action. He added that the embassy is intensifying coordination with Indonesian law enforcement agencies to ensure those with legal issues are promptly investigated upon their return.

Cambodian authorities have also pledged to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in combating cybercrime and stepping up operations against online scam syndicates. As a result, Santo said, more Indonesians are expected to come forward to the embassy in the coming days.

To manage the evolving situation, the embassy is continuing to intensify data collection, conduct legal verifications and case assessments, and issue travel documents to facilitate the repatriation process, he added.
