Jakarta. The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport customs officers have recently caught an Indian national trying to smuggle diamonds worth Rp 1.5 billion or around $100,391 in underwear.

Gatot Sugeng Wibowo, the head of the airport’s Type C  customs office, said that the smuggler -- known by his initials RA -- was following orders from someone in India. The 25-year-old RA earned 5,000 rupees (approximately $61) in exchange for sneaking the diamonds to Indonesia.

“[RA] had a transit flight to Bangkok from India before arriving in Soekarno-Hatta,” Wibowo said on Friday, as reported by Beritasatu.

“[RA] claimed that this was their first time coming to Indonesia,” Wibowo added.

The diamonds, which were put in tiny plastic packages, weighed around 144.27 grams. Wibowo said that the officers suspected RA’s belongings when he landed at Terminal 3 in the airport. After an inspection, the officers discovered two plastics which turned out to have 11 paper wraps that kept the diamonds hidden.

Wibowo added that RA had sewn hidden pockets on the underwear to conceal the diamonds. The officers are planning to detain RA at the central immigration detention center.
