In Prabowo’s First Year, MBG Feeds 30 Million and Boosts Local Economies
Jakarta. Since its launch in early 2025, Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) has become one of the country’s most ambitious social initiatives, combining public health goals with local economic empowerment. Led by the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), the program aims to provide daily access to nutritious food for vulnerable groups while strengthening rural livelihoods through locally sourced ingredients.
MBG is President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship social program, and its rollout has seen both progress and challenges as he approaches his first year in office.
A Nationwide Effort with Over a Billion Meals Served
As of September 26, 2025, the BGN reported that more than 1.1 billion portions of nutritious meals had been distributed across Indonesia --a milestone President Prabowo described as proof of the government’s commitment to building a healthier and more resilient generation.
The program’s annual budget stands at Rp 71 trillion (around $4.3 billion) for this year alone, but the Finance Ministry said only Rp 13 trillion had been spent as of September. The government initially targeted 82.9 million beneficiaries, including students, pregnant women, and toddlers, but the rollout would be paced carefully following several food poisoning incidents.
“To feed tens of millions of people, challenges and obstacles are inevitable. This is a massive undertaking, and there will be shortcomings at the start. But I’m confident we’ll overcome them,” Prabowo said at Halim Perdanakusuma, Jakarta, on Sept. 27.
-
School children: Over 28 million students now receive daily balanced meals to support learning and growth.
-
Toddlers: More than 920,000 children benefit from essential nutrition during early development.
-
Pregnant women: Around 153,000 receive additional nutrients to support maternal and fetal health.
-
Breastfeeding mothers: Approximately 313,000 mothers receive nutritious meals to help nurture healthy infants.
In total, nearly 30 million Indonesians have benefited directly from MBG, making it one of the world’s largest government-led nutrition programs.
From Kitchens to Markets: A Ripple Effect on the Economy
Beyond improving nutrition, MBG has also become a driver of local economic growth. Its nationwide supply chain connects small farmers, livestock producers, fishers, and food operators with the public sector.
According to BGN, 9,406 local food service units (SPPG) are now operational across Indonesia, generating 337,060 new jobs in food sourcing, preparation, and distribution.
President Prabowo said MBG had created a new and stable market for small-scale producers, ensuring continuous demand for staples like rice, eggs, vegetables, and other proteins. He projected total job creation could reach 1.5 million by early 2026 as the program expands.
This decentralized model also keeps money circulating within local communities, boosting rural incomes and supporting regional economies.
Keeping Food Safety Front and Center
While the program’s scale is unprecedented, the government has stressed that food safety remains a top priority. A series of food poisoning cases, affecting about 6,500 students in several regions, led to a sweeping review by BGN and the establishment of an independent investigation team to identify causes and enforce stricter safety controls.
BGN Deputy Chief Nanik S. Deyang said the agency aims for a “zero food safety incident” standard nationwide. President Prabowo acknowledged the incidents but said they accounted for just 0.00017 percent of total meals served.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the government has no plans to suspend the program. “No, it doesn’t mean we have to entirely stop it. We just need to fix the shortcomings. Almost all problems arise from not following procedures properly,” he said.
To prevent further incidents, Prabowo ordered the BGN to ensure that all kitchens are equipped with food safety test kits, hygienic washing and drying systems, antibacterial tools, and water filtration equipment.
The government is also introducing new safety standards that include:
-
Installing ultraviolet, gas, or high-temperature washing systems in all kitchens.
-
Providing water filters and food quality testing tools before distribution.
-
Requiring every kitchen to employ trained food handlers.
These measures are designed to guarantee that every meal prepared under MBG meets strict hygiene and nutritional standards, from ingredient sourcing to delivery.
As one of Indonesia’s flagship welfare programs, MBG is not just about feeding millions but about building the foundation for a healthier, more productive generation, while stimulating grassroots economic growth in the world’s fourth most populous nation.
