Helicopter Wreckage Found in South Kalimantan, One Confirmed Dead
Tanah Bumbu, S. Kalimantan. The wreckage of an Eastindo Air helicopter that vanished three days ago was found destroyed and burned in the dense forests near Mandin Damar Waterfall, Tanah Bumbu district, South Kalimantan, on Wednesday afternoon.
The BK117-D3 helicopter, registered as PK-RGH, was flying from Kotabaru to Palangkaraya when it lost contact on Monday morning. Rescuers later found the wreckage about 700 meters from a location earlier mapped by Indonesia’s transport safety agency (KNKT).
“The wreckage was found around 700 meters from the KNKT’s point,” said First Admiral Yudhi Bramantyo, operations director at Basarnas, during a press briefing on Wednesday night.
Of the eight people on board, three were foreign nationals: Mark Werren from the United States, Santa Kumar from India, and Claudine Quito from Brazil. The other five were Indonesians, including the pilot and four passengers.
The discovery also brought grim news. At 3:53 p.m. local time, rescuers recovered one body about 100 meters from the aircraft remains.
“The victim has been body-packed and prepared for evacuation to the field post,” Yudhi said.
Authorities warned that more victims may still be trapped inside the helicopter’s charred fuselage.
“The exact number has not been confirmed, as the aircraft burned extensively, requiring dismantling to continue the search,” Yudhi added.
The helicopter had been carrying eight people, including a pilot, an engineer, and six passengers. Rescue teams from the Search and Rescue Agency, the military, police, regional disaster agencies, and local volunteers remain on site, working to recover victims and secure the crash area.
