Helicopter with 3 Onboard Loses Contact in North Maluku
Ternate. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) received a report on Tuesday about a missing helicopter with three people onboard from the mining company Weda Bay Nickel in Central Halmahera, North Maluku province.
The Bell 429 PK-WSW helicopter, operated by Helicity, made radio contact at 00:47 p.m. Eastern Indonesia time (03:47 a.m. GMT) as it was about to land in the Jiguru area in Central Halmahera.
According to Fathur Rahman, the head of the Basarnas office in Ternate, the pilot reported an altitude of 2,000 feet. After landing, the pilot mentioned plans to report again when the helicopter was leaving the area, and that was the last contact with the company, he said in a press statement.
At 1:15 p.m. local time, a helicopter landing officer at Cekel Airport’s Air Traffic Control in Central Weda attempted to contact the pilot following reports of the sound of an explosion from residents. Unfortunately, the radio call received no response.
Basarnas dispatched a team to search for the helicopter at 7:00 assisted by the district police, he added. The missing helicopter carried two pilots and a passenger, but their identities weren’t disclosed.
