Gov’t Repatriates Body of Indonesian Who Dies in Riot-Hit Bangladesh
Jakarta. The government has repatriated the body of an Indonesian citizen who recently died in riot-struck Bangladesh.
The victim, referred to by their initials DU, arrived in Bangladesh on Aug. 1 for a business trip. DU died in Bangladesh’s Jashore on Aug. 5, after rioters attacked the hotel that the victim was staying in, even setting the building on fire. DU passed away after inhaling too much smoke from the fire. DU was 50 years old.
“The victim’s body arrived in Indonesia on Wednesday. After arriving at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, an ambulance took [DU’s body] to a funeral home in Semarang,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry announced on Friday.
The government handed over DU’s body to family members on Thursday.
The unrest started in June with Bangladeshi university students protesting the government job quota. The tension spiraled into calls for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down.
The protests turned deadly as protesters and the police got into a clash. Protesters even set fire to a hotel owned by a leader of Hasina’s party in Jashore. Hasina finally resigned and fled the country.
