Government to Shut Bali Crossings Ahead of Nyepi, Eid Travel Peak
Jakarta. The Transportation Ministry has imposed special regulations on ferry crossings during Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence in March 2026, including the temporary suspension of ferry services to and from Bali.
The policy is intended to respect the Hindu religious observance and to maintain public order, security and smooth mobility, particularly as Nyepi falls close to the Eid al-Fitr homecoming period.
Nyepi is a sacred day observed by Hindus in Bali, during which no outdoor activities are permitted for 24 hours. Devotees observe Catur Brata Penyepian, refraining from travel, work, lighting fires or lamps excessively, and entertainment. All residents and tourists are required to remain inside their homes or accommodations, and vehicle movements across the island are halted to preserve silence and peace.
Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan said Monday that ferry services linking Bali with neighboring islands will be temporarily suspended during the observance.
Operational adjustments will be implemented in line with the decree to ensure respect for Nyepi while anticipating increased traffic during the Eid holiday.
The temporary closure schedule is as follows:
- Ketapang Port: March 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. to March 20, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. (local time).
- Gilimanuk Port: March 19, 2026, at 5:00 a.m. to March 20, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. (local time).
- Lembar Port: March 18, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. to March 20, 2026, at 1:30 a.m. (local time).
- Padang Bai Port: March 19, 2026, at 4:00 a.m. to March 20, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. (local time).
All ferry operations on these routes will resume after the Nyepi holiday period ends.
The ministry urged travelers to adjust their departure schedules and monitor official updates from the Directorate General of Land Transportation and ferry operators to ensure safe and smooth journeys.
