North Lombok, W. Nusa Tenggara.  A French woman was found dead on the terrace of her rented home on Gili Air Island in North Lombok, Indonesia, on Saturday morning, police said, in an incident that has shocked local residents and tourists in the area.

The victim was identified as Lyna Normies, a 35-year-old French national. Her body was discovered at around 7 a.m. local time in front of the rental house where she had been staying in Gili Air hamlet, Gili Indah village, Pemenang district.

North Lombok Police Chief Agus Purwanta confirmed the incident, saying officers responded immediately after receiving a report from the public.

“This morning, officers from the Gili Indah sub-sector, Pemenang police, and the North Lombok Criminal Investigation Unit handled a report of a foreign woman found dead, with initial indications pointing to suicide,” Wilandra said on Saturday.

Police said a witness, Patrick Gatel Pascal Honore, also a French national, received a phone call at around 6:56 a.m. from a friend named Sandra, who asked him to check on the victim after she could not be reached.

At about 7 a.m., Patrick arrived at the rental home and found the woman unresponsive on the front terrace. He immediately shouted for help, drawing the attention of a local resident, Mahdan, who was working at a nearby construction site.

Mahdan rushed to the scene and attempted to assist before reporting the incident to the local hamlet head, who then notified the police.

Officers from the Gili Indah sub-sector, Pemenang police, and the North Lombok Criminal Investigation Unit secured the scene, set up a police line, and conducted an on-site investigation to collect evidence and witness statements.

“Our initial steps included securing the scene, collecting evidence, and recording statements from witnesses around the location,” Wilandra said.

Preliminary findings suggest the death may have been a suicide, though police said further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and circumstances.

“At this stage, the initial indication points to suicide. However, investigators will continue their examination to ensure the case is clarified thoroughly,” Wilandra said.

The case remains under investigation by North Lombok Police, who are also coordinating with relevant authorities, including the French Embassy, to handle the matter in accordance with established procedures.
