Four Members of Family Die after Falling from Apartment Roof
Jakarta. A couple and their two teenage children died after falling from the roof of a 21-floor apartment in Jakarta on Saturday, with police suspecting a mass suicide.
Police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide based on their review of video footage from security cameras at the Teluk Intan Tower Apartment in the Penjaringan District.
The deceased have been identified by their initials as EA, 50, his wife AIL, 52, their 15-year-old daughter JL, and 13-year-old son JWA.
The family entered the parking ground with a Daihatsu GranMax at 4:02 p.m. and proceeded to the apartment’s main lobby two minutes later, according to Penjaringan Police Chief Comr. Agus Ady Wijaya.
Using an elevator to reach the 21st floor, they then walked the stairs to the roof and tragically fell to the parking ground at 4:21 p.m., the officer added.
The husband kissed his wife and children on the foreheads inside the elevator. He collected their cellular phones and put them into a bag, Agus said, describing a police review of the footage.
"From these gestures, we concluded that the mass suicide had been pre-planned," Agus said.
As the footage also did not show anyone else during the sequence of events leading to the incident, the police are considering this case as a potential mass suicide.
"We are not yet able to determine the motive that led these family members to commit suicide," Agus said, adding that the police are still investigating the scene, collecting evidence, and gathering testimonies.
Agus further said that the father and daughter had their hands tied to each other with a rope, and the mother was tied to her son when their bodies were discovered.
“However, we can confirm that this is a suicide case,” Agus concluded.
The bodies have been sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta for autopsies, he added.
