Jakarta. Former senior minister Rizal Ramli passed away while undergoing treatment at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta on Tuesday at the age of 69.

A statement released by the family confirmed Rizal's passing at 7:30 p.m., although specifics regarding the circumstances of his death were not disclosed.

"On his behalf, the family humbly seeks forgiveness for any shortcomings he might have had during his lifetime," the statement reads.

Rizal served as the coordinating minister for investment and maritime affairs from August 2015 to July 2016 during President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration before becoming a vocal critic of the government.

While in the Jokowi cabinet, he frequently found himself at odds with fellow cabinet members and openly expressed his discontent through the media.

During the brief presidency of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), Rizal held various ministerial positions, including serving as the coordinating minister for the economy and as finance minister from August 2000 to August 2001.

Before his ministerial roles, he led the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) for a year.

In 2018, Rizal publicly expressed his intention to run for the 2019 presidential election but he never received the backing of any political party.
