Floodwaters Headed for Jakarta, Arrival Expected by 5 A.M. Sunday: Official
Bogor. Jakarta is at risk of flooding on Sunday morning as the water level at Katulampa Dam in Bogor continues to rise following heavy rainfall in the Puncak highlands and surrounding areas on Saturday evening.
Located in the highlands south of Jakarta, Bogor often becomes the upstream source of floodwaters that flow into the capital when torrential rains overwhelm local dams.
Muhammad Alwan, an official at the Katulampa Dam, reported that the water level had reached 150 centimeters by Saturday evening, placing it at Alert Level 3 (Siaga 3).
He warned Jakarta residents, particularly those living along the banks of the Ciliwung River, to brace for potential flooding.
“The peak water level occurred at around 6 p.m., with a flow rate of approximately 176,000 liters per second heading directly toward Jakarta via the Ciliwung River,” Alwan said. “The floodwaters are expected to reach Jakarta around 5 a.m. Residents along the riverbanks should remain on alert.”
As of 7 p.m., rainfall was still ongoing in Bogor.
A similar flood event in March saw the Ciliwung River overflow its banks, inundating large parts of Jakarta and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.
