Fire Destroys Hundreds of Stalls at Jakarta’s Main Wholesale Food Market
Jakarta. A major fire swept through Kramat Jati Market, Jakarta’s main wholesale food market and a national price reference hub, on Monday morning, destroying at least 350 kiosks, authorities said.
No fatalities were reported, but the blaze caused extensive damage to large sections of the market, which is dominated by traders selling vegetables, fruit, and other fresh food products.
According to a trader identified as Heri, the fire started at a single kiosk and spread rapidly due to the presence of flammable materials and strong winds. Witnesses said the flames intensified within minutes and moved toward the upper section of the building near rows of fruit vendors.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control about an hour later after deploying 16 fire engines to the scene.
Jakarta’s provincial government said it would form an investigation team involving multiple agencies to determine the cause of the fire. Governor’s office spokesperson Chico Hakim said Kramat Jati Market plays a strategic role in Jakarta’s food distribution system.
“Kramat Jati Market is a critical food distribution center for Jakarta, so fire control and prevention are top priorities to prevent broader disruptions to public supply,” Chico said.
East Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Alfian Nurrizal said the investigation is ongoing and no conclusions will be drawn until forensic teams complete their examination.
Witnesses said the fire was first spotted by traders and nearby residents at around 7:15 a.m. local time, before spreading significantly less than 10 minutes later. Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and monitor potential impacts on food distribution in the capital.
