Fact Checking Anies' Claim: Who Is Mega Suryani Dewi?
Jakarta. During the inaugural presidential debate on Tuesday evening, Anies Baswedan brought attention to the tragic death of housewife Mega Suryani Dewi as an opening to launch criticism over the police's perceived failure to protect the vulnerable.
"Mega Suryani Dewi, a housewife, was subjected to abuse by her husband. She reported it to the police, but her pleas were ignored, and tragically, she lost her life," Anies said on the debate stage.
According to fact-checking by Beritasatu.com, Mega, 24, met her demise at the hands of her husband, Nando Kusuma Wardana, 25, on Sept. 9, 2023, at their rented house in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java. Nando is currently in police custody.
However, Anies' claim of the police's inaction was inaccurate. Mega's mother, Neng Linda, revealed that her daughter reported domestic violence to the Metro Bekasi Police on August 7.
The report included medical evidence issued by Annisa Hospital in Cikarang.
Repeated instances of domestic violence were also evident in Mega's social media posts on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
According to the mother, Mega and Nando voluntarily agreed to reconcile as domestic violence subsided, facilitated by a legal agreement signed on a duty-stamp paper, ensuring that Nando would not physically abuse his wife.
The agreement paper was signed at the police station.
Mega took the decision in the interests of the couple's two children aged 3.5 years and 1.5 years.
