Medan. Former North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi confirmed recently that he had received support from two political parties that cleared his way to contest the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Before his announcement on Wednesday, Bobby Nasution, the son-in-law of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, was the sole potential candidate for the North Sumatra governorship with support from nearly all incumbent parties.

Edy, a retired army general, said he had received a mandate from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) to challenge Bobby.

"I’m seeking candidacy for the North Sumatra governor and the recent development means that I won’t contest as an independent candidate. PDIP and Hanura are the remaining parties that agreed to support my candidacy," Edy said at his campaign office in Medan.

Both parties have asked him to seek a running mate before August 28, he added.

"I’m now allowed to wave the flags of PDI-P and Hanura at my campaign headquarters,” Edy said.
