Edward Hiariej Drops Pre-Trial Motion Challenging His Graft Charges
Jakarta. Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, who recently resigned as the vice justice minister amid corruption allegations, on Wednesday dropped his ongoing motion to challenge his designation as a graft suspect.
His lawyers didn’t explain the reason behind the abrupt decision.
"Our client requested us to drop this motion," Iwan Prayitno, an attorney for Edward, told the judge in a hearing at the South Jakarta District Court.
The judge asked him if there was any particular reason for the request, to which the attorney replied: “None, Your Honor.”
Edward is accused of accepting at least Rp 7 billion in bribe money while in office and on December 7 he tendered his resignation to the president.
Two other suspects in the case, Edward’s personal assistants Yogi Arie Rukmana and Yosi Andika Mulyadi, also decided to give up their pre-trial motion.
"This decision came directly from Mr. Eddy and we only conveyed his request to the court. There’s no further information we can say right now,” the lawyer said, referring to Edward by his nickname.
In a separate hearing later in the day, the legal team of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said they welcome Edward's decision and will continue to investigate his corruption case.
