Drugs Agency Warns Against Misusing “Whip Pink” Laughing Gas After Influencer’s Death
Jakarta. The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has urged the public to never experiment with so-called “laughing gas,” sold under the Whip Pink brand on e-commerce platforms, warning that misuse of the substance can lead to severe and even fatal consequences.
The warning comes amid widespread discussion on social media following the reported death of influencer Lula Lahfah, which has been allegedly linked to the misuse of the substance. Whip Pink is a whipped cream charger contained in a small metal canister filled with nitrous oxide gas, designed for use with a whipped cream dispenser to aerate cream for culinary purposes, not for inhalation.
BNN Chief Suyudi Ario Seto said laughing gas contains dinitrogen oxide (N₂O), a colorless, non-flammable gas at room temperature that has a slightly sweet smell and taste when inhaled. Whipped cream chargers and their substance have not been classified as a narcotic or psychotropic substance under Law No. 35 of 2009 or Minister of Health Regulation No. 7 of 2025.
“N₂O is not intended for recreational use. Its euphoric effect is short-lived, but the risks are fatal and permanent,” Suyudi said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He explained that the substance is commonly referred to as "laughing gas" because users may appear cheerful and laugh excessively after inhaling it. Outside medical settings, however, N₂O is often misused as an inhalant to induce brief euphoria, relaxation, or mild hallucinations.
Suyudi warned that such misuse is extremely dangerous, as it can cause oxygen deprivation, nerve damage, and death. Long-term abuse, he added, can result in permanent neurological damage, severe vitamin B12 deficiency, and a risk of fatal hypoxia.
“The misuse of N₂O for euphoric effects poses serious health risks, including permanent nerve damage and the possibility of death due to oxygen deprivation,” he said.
BNN called on the public to remain vigilant and educate family members about the dangers of N₂O misuse, including recognizing its common forms, such as small canisters or cartridges and balloons used for inhalation.
Suyudi also urged parents to closely monitor their children’s social environments and report any suspected illegal distribution of N₂O. He encouraged the public to report the sale or misuse of the substance to BNN’s hotline at 184 or to the nearest police station.
“If a family member is involved, immediately contact BNN’s counseling and rehabilitation services, which are confidential and free of charge,” he added.
