Deploying Elephants to Disaster Zones Isn't an Easy Task
Jakarta. Trained elephants have been deployed to assist cleanup efforts in flood- and landslide-hit areas of Pidie Jaya, Aceh, after heavy machinery failed to reach the worst-affected locations, officials said on Tuesday.
The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) mobilized four elephants to remove logs and large debris that were swept into residential zones and roads during recent flash floods.
“In this emergency situation, BKSDA Aceh feels a moral responsibility to help the community. One way is to assist in clearing post-disaster debris,” said Ujang Wisnu Barata, head of BKSDA Aceh.
Before deploying the animals, a team surveyed the area to map routes, define work zones, and designate rest points. Work durations are being adjusted according to each elephant’s physical condition.
Ujang said the agency prioritized animal welfare throughout the operation. Resting areas were prepared with adequate food supplies, supplemental nutrition, and regular health monitoring by veterinarians.
“Water access has been a primary concern. To ensure sufficient hydration, our team has stationed a water truck and hoses on standby throughout the operation,” he added.
The use of elephants in disaster recovery is not new in Asia. During the 2004 Aceh tsunami, trained elephants were also deployed to clear rubble and debris.
“This is proof that elephants are not humanity’s enemy,” Ujang said. “Do not destroy their habitat. Do not disturb their home. Because in moments when everything collapses, elephants can help protect humans.”
The mobilization team consists of eight mahouts (elephant handlers), forest rangers, and veterinarians, all working under BKSDA supervision to ensure both safety and environmental responsibility.
