Canada Makes World Cup History With Dramatic Win Over South Africa
Inglewood, California. Right after Canada secured the first knockout-stage victory in its World Cup history, coach Jesse Marsch gathered his players on the field amid the pandemonium and delivered an emotional message.
"You guys are Canadian heroes today!" Marsch shouted. "Canadian heroes for the future children of this country who play this sport. The sport has a big future because of you guys. You should be so proud of who you are. You should be so proud of this game. You never lost belief. You went after it, point after point, moment after moment. You are Canadian heroes!"
Stephen Eustáquio's dramatic late goal inspired Marsch to Ted Lasso-like levels of sincerity, and he didn't mind who noticed.
Soccer has rarely occupied center stage on Canada's crowded sports landscape, and Les Rouges are making only their third World Cup appearance this summer. But Marsch believes Sunday's landmark 1-0 victory over South Africa could capture the nation's imagination for years to come.
"We could have made life a little easier on ourselves if we had converted one of our earlier chances," Marsch said. "But obviously the timing of the goal makes the win incredibly dramatic, and I think the effect it will have in Canada, and the inspiration it will provide, will be immense."
After more than 90 minutes of frustration against a disciplined South African defense at SoFi Stadium, Canada made history in an instant. Alistair Johnston's long ball into the penalty area was only partially cleared, falling directly to Eustáquio.
The midfielder, who plays professionally for Los Angeles FC, calmly brought the ball down with his chest before firing a bouncing shot into the bottom corner of Ronwen Williams' net in the second minute of stoppage time. He then sprinted toward Canada's bench to celebrate.
"We worked for it," Eustáquio said. "We have a special group. We feel like we are brothers. When we fight for each other, when we play for each other, special things like this can happen. I am over the moon, but at the same time I don't want to say that the job is finished."
Canada, ranked 30th in the latest FIFA rankings, advanced to face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on Saturday.
After playing its three group-stage matches in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada missed the chance to make history at home when it lost 2-1 to Switzerland last Wednesday, sending it on the road for the knockout rounds. Marsch's resilient team responded by winning the tournament's first round-of-32 match and reaching the round of 16 for the first time in its three World Cup appearances.
The Canadians were clear crowd favorites in the Los Angeles area, backed by traveling supporters and thousands of local fans, including several wearing Eustáquio's LAFC jersey.
"We never stopped believing," Eustáquio said. "And I think the goal is really something that we deserved."
After finishing second in their respective groups, both South Africa and Canada entered the match seeking their nations' first World Cup knockout victory.
Canada received another boost in the 75th minute when star defender Alphonso Davies made his first appearance of the tournament. The Bayern Munich defender missed the group stage after suffering his third hamstring injury of the year last month.
Davies returned at the same stadium where he tore a knee ligament during CONCACAF Nations League play in March 2025.
He immediately produced Canada's best pass of the match, setting up Promise David for a clear opportunity, but the forward shot wide. The game soon settled back into a stalemate before Eustáquio ensured Canada avoided extra time.
"Steph is one of the people in the team that I think is the most reliable and understands what we're trying to achieve as a group," Marsch said. "He understands how to manage moments in games and how to be a leader, a true leader. It was good to see him, in that moment, simply being in the moment and thinking about the best way to strike the ball to give it the best chance to go in. Really composed and really well executed."
Williams made five saves for South Africa, which defended resolutely and remained in contention until the final moments while pursuing a historic victory of its own. Bafana Bafana stayed organized defensively and created several promising opportunities despite managing only one shot on target.
South Africa finished the tournament with two goals in four matches.
"We lost the game because there was a lack of power and speed in our team when I compare that with our opponent," South Africa coach Hugo Broos said. "It was certainly a difficult game. But when we look back, we can be fairly satisfied with what we did."
