BPOM Orders Withdrawal of Okko Breads for Containing Toxic Chemical
Jakarta. The Drug and Food Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has ordered the immediate withdrawal of Okko bread products from the market due to the presence of dangerous chemical substances.
Recent laboratory tests revealed that Okko breads contain sodium dehydroacetate, a chemical banned in food production in Indonesia, the agency announced.
The manufacturer, PT Abadi Rasa Food, based in Bandung, has been instructed to remove all products from distribution.
"BPOM orders the Okko bread producer to withdraw all products from the market, destroy them, and report the results," the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.
The discovery was made during a BPOM inspection of the company's production facility on July 2. The agency noted inconsistencies between the actual product composition and the information presented during registration.
While BPOM allows the use of sodium dehydroacetate as a preservative in the cosmetics industry, it is prohibited in food processing.
Experts warn that regular consumption of this substance can be toxic to the liver and kidneys.
