BMKG Warns Bali Rains to Persist for 3 More Days After Severe Flooding
Jakarta. Torrential rains swept across much of Bali these past two days (Sept. 9–10), triggering flash floods, fallen trees, and heavy traffic disruptions in several parts of the island.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Denpasar recorded daily rainfall exceeding 150 millimeters in some regencies and cities. “Rainfall is expected to persist over the next three days, with light to moderate intensity in most areas of Bali,” said Cahyo Nugroho, head of BMKG Region III Denpasar, on Wednesday.
According to BMKG, the downpour affected Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar, Klungkung, and Karangasem, with rainfall ranging from heavy, above 50 mm per day, to extreme levels exceeding 150 mm. The prolonged rains through Wednesday morning triggered multiple hydrometeorological disasters, including flash floods.
BMKG attributed the extreme weather to the active equatorial Rossby wave, which has intensified convective cloud growth. “High air humidity up to 12,000 meters supported the formation of towering convective clouds, resulting in heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning,” Cahyo explained.
Floods inundated residential areas near Pura Demak and the Badung Market in Denpasar, close to the Tukad Badung River. In Jembrana, rising waters hit Dusun Munduk in Pengambengan village, where one person was reported missing after being swept away. The floods also disrupted the Denpasar-Gilimanuk route, causing long traffic delays toward Gilimanuk Port.
Separately, Bali’s disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) reported fallen trees in Tabanan and Karangasem, which blocked roads and damaged power lines.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and heed official warnings as extreme weather is likely to continue in the coming days.
