Bekasi. At least four people were killed after a massive garbage landslide struck the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility in Bekasi, just east of Jakarta, on Sunday following heavy overnight rain.

Authorities deployed joint teams consisting of police, military personnel, search-and-rescue units, and volunteers to recover victims trapped under the collapsed waste piles. Excavators were used to assist the evacuation efforts.

Bekasi Metro Police Chief Kusumo Wahyu Bintoro said the fourth victim discovered at the site was a garbage truck driver.

“Just moments ago, the fourth body was recovered at the location. He was identified as a garbage truck driver,” Kusumo said.

Police have not yet confirmed whether additional victims may still be buried beneath the debris.

Search operations are continuing but are being carried out cautiously due to the risk of further landslides, as the waste mound remains unstable after heavy rainfall. Emergency teams remain on site as search and recovery operations continue.

“We are assessing the situation at the site. If conditions allow, we will continue the rescue operations,” Kusumo said.

The three other victims included another garbage truck driver, Dedi Sutrisno, and two food stall owners who operated small eateries near the landfill: Enda Widayanti, 25, and Sumine, 60.

Trucks and Buildings Buried
Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the Jakarta Search and Rescue Office, said the landslide buried several garbage trucks and roadside food stalls located near the landfill area.

“There are still many garbage trucks and stalls buried in the area. We are currently conducting data collection to determine the number of victims,” Desiana said.

Authorities are continuing to assess the site to determine whether additional victims remain trapped and to identify how many vehicles were affected by the landslide.
