Jakarta. The National Democrat (Nasdem) Party has officially endorsed former Jakarta Governor and presidential candidate Anies Baswedan for the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election. This decision was made by the Nasdem Party’s Central Executive Board (DPP), led by Chairman Surya Paloh, at Nasdem Tower, Gondangdia, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Monday.

“This afternoon, we have resolutely decided on the Jakarta gubernatorial race. Chairman Surya Paloh led the meeting and officially named Mr. Anies Baswedan as the Nasdem candidate for Governor of Jakarta,” said Nasdem Secretary-General Hermawi Taslim during a press conference following the meeting.

According to Hermawi, Nasdem has granted Anies the freedom to choose his running mate for the Jakarta gubernatorial race, provided that the vice governor is not from Nasdem.

Hermawi noted that this decision follows a plenary meeting held on May 11, where three potential candidates for Jakarta governor were discussed: Anies Baswedan, Nasdem DPR member Ahmad Sahroni, and Wibi Andrino, Chairman of the Nasdem Faction in the Jakarta Regional Parliament (DPRD).

Nasdem, which also endorsed Anies in the 2024 presidential election, has set a deadline for him to declare his running mate by August 22.

To date, Anies Baswedan has received official endorsements from both the Nasdem Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) for the Jakarta gubernatorial race. With 18 seats from PKS and 11 from Nasdem, Anies’ supporting parties hold a total of 29 seats in the Jakarta DPRD. The National Awakening Party (PKB) is expected to officially declare its support soon.

Anies Baswedan expressed his honor and gratitude for Nasdem’s endorsement. “I feel honored and humbly accept the mandate from the Nasdem Party. We will carry out this responsibility with utmost respect and commitment,” Anies said.

Anies plans to reopen political communications with other parties regarding his vice governor selection. “The vice governor candidate will be discussed with the supporting parties such as PKS and PKB. We hope for full support from all coalition parties,” Anies stated.

He thanked the Nasdem Party for their support and emphasized the goal of working together with Nasdem and other coalition partners to enhance Jakarta. “We have seriously discussed Jakarta’s future. Mr. Surya Paloh emphasized the importance of advancing Jakarta. Our aim is to continue successful initiatives and focus on improvements where needed, so Jakarta can become a leading global city,” Anies concluded.

Previously, Surya Paloh also confirmed full support for Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) leader Kaesang Pangarep in the 2024 Central Java gubernatorial race. Kaesang, the son of President Joko Widodo and the younger brother of Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, competed against Anies in the 2024 presidential election.
