Jakarta. Residents in Banten and Lampung went on the alert after Anak Krakatau volcano showed eruptive activities on Monday on Tuesday.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BNPB, said it received reports that Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait had erupted and urged residents and holiday-goers to keep themselves updated with the agency’s latest information.

Anak Krakatau, or the Child of Krakatau, spewed out ash column about 1,000 meters up to the air from its crater on Monday. The top of the volcano is 1,157 meters above the sea level.

The BNPB puts the volcanic alert level at two, meaning a danger around the crater rim, and urged residents and tourists “to stay away from the crater within a radius of two kilometers,” BNPB spokesman Agus Wibowo said on Tuesday.

“Coastal areas beyond the 2-kilometer zone are safe for visitors,” he said.

Last December, an undersea rockslide triggered by Anak Krakatau’s eruption generated a tsunami that killed more than 400 people in Banten and Lampung.

This year, the BMKG has installed 12 seismic censors, four tsunami radars and seven water level devices on the Sunda Strait to faster detect a possible tsunami, Agus said.

In addition, the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) has also placed a tsunami buoy, eight tide gauges and two water level devices.

“The mitigation system built at the Sunda Strait is the most complete, not only in Indonesia but also in the world,” Agus claimed.
