Jakarta. The National Police have arrested at least 36 members of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah, or JAD, in a nationwide crackdown on the shadowy militant group after the stabbing attack on Chief Security Minister Wiranto last week, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

Indonesian authorities blamed JAD for the attack in broad daylight that injured Wiranto and two other people during his visit to Pandeglang, Banten, on Oct. 10.

The attacker, identified as Syahril Alamsyah alias Abu Rara and believed to be a key JAD figure, was arrested at the scene along with his wife Fitri Andriana.

Police said the couple were among 36 JAD suspects arrested by the elite counter-terror squad Detachment 88 since the incident.

"Members of this group interact with each other on social media and messaging platforms such as WhatsApp group," police spokesman Insp. Gen. M. Iqbal said.

"They learned how to assemble bombs in the social media group. They also pledge their allegiance [to JAD] on online platforms. This is a new phenomenon," he said.

According to Iqbal, the JAD members were arrested in different provinces including North Sulawesi, Jambi, Bali, East Java, Central Java, Banten, West Java and Central Sulawesi.
