Jakarta. As many as 22 Indonesians fleeing from the Middle East conflict arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Indonesia has evacuated 32 people from Iran via Azerbaijan. These evacuees will head back to Jakarta in phases. The aircraft carrying the initial 22 individuals landed in Soekarno-Hatta Airport at around 6 p.m. Fourteen students and 5 tourists were part of this arrival. From here on, their respective regional governments will assist the trips back home.

The remaining 10 Indonesians will arrive at Soekarno-Hatta Airport the following day.

“Since the conflict erupted, the Foreign Ministry alongside our diplomatic representatives in the Middle East have been in close communication. This is to closely monitor the situation, keep track of our citizens, and discuss the contingency steps,” Foreign Minister Sugiono said.

Government data shows there are 329 Indonesians residing in Iran. Many are students who mainly live in Qom. The rest are Indonesian migrant workers and expatriates.

The Iran War started when the US and Israel struck Tehran in late February. The attack fueled retaliatory strikes by Tehran across the region.
