Jakarta. The Hong Kong police recently arrested 14 Indonesians on suspicion of money laundering, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Wednesday.

Six other Hong Kong citizens were also arrested in the probe.

“All 20 people are strong suspects of money laundering. The [Hong Kong police] are still investigating the case, and they will soon inform our consulate-general of the names of the suspects,” the ministry’s citizen protection director Judha Nugraha told reporters in Jakarta.

According to Judha, it is suspected that a money laundering ring had asked the 14 Indonesians in question to open up a bank account online. The syndicate then put illegally obtained money in these bank accounts.

“To the Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong, please watch out for money laundering schemes. Don’t get tempted if someone asks you to open a bank account and lend it to others to keep suspicious money, even if you receive part of the proceeds. Because that classifies as money laundering,” Judha said.
