Jakarta. A perimeter wall at Jeruk Purut Public Cemetery in South Jakarta collapsed on Thursday following heavy overnight rain, forcing the relocation of 12 graves buried under rubble and landslide debris.

The 2.5-meter-high, 40-meter-long wall was unable to withstand the large volume of water that accumulated during the storm. The saturated soil and runoff caused the structure to give way, sending mud and debris cascading into burial plots.

“We are currently carrying out the relocation of the affected graves and clearing debris from the site,” said Royani, the cemetery coordinator, on Friday.

Heavy machinery has been deployed to speed up the removal of soil and stones. Royani said the relocation and cleanup are expected to be completed by the end of the day.

Reconstruction of the damaged 40-meter section of the wall will begin once the site is cleared, with completion targeted within a month, he added.

The South Jakarta city administration has urged residents to remain cautious amid the risk of further landslides and flooding, as extreme weather conditions are forecast to persist in the coming days.
